Livestock and Poultry Disease Incidents Decrease Significantly
In the first half of 2022, disease outbreaks in livestock and poultry decreased significantly compared to the same period last year.
On July 8, 2022, at the conference reviewing the first six months of the year and outlining tasks for the second half, Mr. Nguyễn Văn Long, Acting Director of the Department of Animal Health (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), reported that animal diseases in livestock and poultry had decreased significantly in recent times. The veterinary sector has proactively coordinated activities to prevent and control diseases, contributing significantly to the agricultural, forestry, and fishery export value of $27.88 billion for the first half of the year.
According to Mr. Long, in terms of disease surveillance and warning, the Department of Animal Health led and coordinated with organizations to monitor avian influenza viruses at live poultry markets in 33 provinces and cities. They also monitored the H7N9 virus in several northern border provinces such as Quảng Ninh, Lạng Sơn, Lào Cai, and Cao Bằng. As a result, the Department collected 1,763 pooled samples and sent 1,866 samples to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Regarding livestock and poultry diseases, there were 22 outbreaks of avian influenza in 20 districts of 13 provinces and cities. The total number of infected, dead, and culled poultry was 58,480. Currently, there are 2 outbreaks of avian influenza A/H5N1 in Thái Bình and Bắc Ninh that have not yet been resolved within 21 days. Compared to the same period in 2021, the number of outbreaks has decreased fourfold, the number of affected provinces has decreased by 2.1 times, and the number of culled poultry has decreased by 6.3 times.
In the first six months of 2022, there were 753 outbreaks of African swine fever in 225 districts of 47 provinces and cities. The total number of infected, dead, and culled pigs was 36,516. Currently, there are 138 outbreaks in 62 districts of 21 provinces and cities that have not yet been resolved within 21 days; the number of infected pigs is 9,867, and the total number of dead and culled pigs is 10,076. Compared to the same period in 2021, the number of affected communes has decreased by 1.5 times, and the number of culled pigs has decreased by nearly 3 times.
There have been outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in 5 districts of 4 provinces and cities, with a total of 77 affected livestock. Currently, there are 4 outbreaks in Đồng Tháp that have not yet been resolved within 21 days; the number of affected livestock is 37, with 1 dead and culled. Compared to the same period in 2021, the number of affected communes has decreased by nearly 11.7 times, and the number of affected livestock has decreased by nearly 43.5 times.
There have been 206 outbreaks of lumpy skin disease in 47 districts of 13 provinces and cities. The total number of affected livestock is 2,116, with 394 culled. Currently, there are 12 outbreaks in 7 provinces that have not yet been resolved within 21 days; the number of affected livestock is 55, and the total number of dead and culled livestock is 12. Compared to the same period in 2021, the number of outbreaks has decreased by 14.3 times, the number of affected livestock has decreased by 68.9 times, and the number of culled livestock has decreased by 54.7 times.
