According to Mr. Tien Ngoc Tien, Head of the Veterinary Sub-Department for Region VII, there have been several cases of foot-and-mouth disease in cattle in Dong Thap recently. The affected cases were localized in cattle purchased from other regions and were separated from the local herd, preventing the disease from spreading in the area.

“The Sub-Department has coordinated with Dong Thap Province to implement vaccination measures to prevent the spread of the disease. Additionally, the Sub-Department has contacted relevant units to check the issuance of quarantine certificates in the province,” Mr. Tien Ngoc Tien said.

According to Mr. Bach Duc Luu, Head of the Veterinary Sub-Department for Region VI, there were three outbreaks of avian influenza in the first half of 2022, resulting in the culling of 7,700 birds. African swine fever also showed an increasing trend compared to 2021, with outbreaks affecting 449 pig farming households and requiring the culling of over 10,000 pigs.

Mr. Bach Duc Luu noted that the vaccination rate for livestock has been relatively low recently. This is attributed to the impact of COVID-19 and the consequences of the collapse of the local veterinary system.

In this regard, the Head of the Veterinary Sub-Department for Region VI has proposed that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development issued a directive to provincial People’s Committees to enhance vaccination efforts for livestock, especially against rabies, as disease outbreaks are more likely towards the end of the year.

According to Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien, the severe outbreaks of livestock diseases in many regions pose significant challenges for the veterinary sector specifically and the agriculture sector more broadly in the first half of 2022.

Despite these challenges, the agriculture sector has achieved notable successes, including a total meat production of 3.4 million tons, seafood exports reaching nearly 5.8 billion USD, and maintaining national food security while effectively adapting to the difficulties and challenges posed by COVID-19.

Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien emphasized that one of the most valuable contributions of the veterinary system to the agriculture sector is its readiness to respond to various diseases, whether it be blue ear disease, foot-and-mouth disease, avian influenza, or African swine fever.
