Tien Giang is a region with a strong livestock, poultry, and aquaculture industry in the Mekong Delta. Recently, the sharp increase in fuel prices has led to a surge in the cost of feed and veterinary medicines<\/span>, resulting in no profits for farmers and making their livelihoods difficult. <\/span><\/div>\n
Despite the price of red tilapia reaching a ‘record high’ (38,000 VND\/kg), many fishermen in Tien Giang Province have suspended their operations due to losses from high feed costs. Recently, the price of feed for cage fish has continuously risen, causing fishermen to incur losses of over 3,000 VND\/kg.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Pig farmers in Tien Giang Province are hesitant to restock their herds due to the high cost of feed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Mr. Nguyen Tan Binh, a long-time cage fish farmer in Thoi Son Islet, My Tho City, shared his concerns that with the rise in fuel prices, feed costs have increased by 30% compared to previous years, while the price of fish has only gone up by 3,000 VND\/kg in the past two weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The price of fish has now reached 38,000 VND\/kg, but farmers are still losing money. They will only break even when the price reaches 41,000 VND\/kg and start making a profit at 42,000 VND\/kg or higher. However, the high cost of feed is discouraging people from stocking their ponds and leading them to suspend their operations. Additionally, feed suppliers do not offer credit and require payment in cash. Now, only those who have assets to use as collateral for bank loans can afford to buy feed for their fish, while those without collateral have no choice but to stop farming,” Mr. Binh said<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Feed is a crucial factor for achieving high efficiency in pig farming.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Along with fish, pig farming in Tien Giang Province usually ranks second (after Ben Tre), but it has recently declined sharply due to the excessively high costs of feed and veterinary medicine. Currently, even though the price of pigs is around 5.5 million VND per hundred kilograms, farmers are still not making a profit. Xuan Dong Commune in Cho Gao District has the largest pig herd in Tien Giang Province. Previously, this area had nearly 50,000 pigs, but now the number has dropped to fewer than 5,000. Many pig farms have shifted to raising poultry and waterfowl.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGi\u00e1 th\u1ee9c \u0103n hi\u1ec7n nay khi\u1ebfn ng\u01b0\u1eddi d\u00e2n nu\u00f4i heo kh\u00f4ng c\u00f3 l\u00e3i<\/a>, “This has led some households to switch to raising industrial ducks. Each pig requires 13 bags of feed from the start of rearing until it is sold, with each bag costing 350,000 VND. Therefore, if not managed properly, farmers will incur losses. In general, the price of pigs needs to be 6 million VND per hundred kilograms for farmers to make a profit. Currently, only a few large-scale pig farms remain, while most small-scale farmers have stopped,” said Mr. Nguyen Van Muoi, Chairman of Xuan Dong Commune.<\/span><\/p>\n

Overall, poultry farms raising chickens, ducks, and quails in Tien Giang Province are not achieving high efficiency at the moment due to soaring investment costs, particularly for labor, feed, and disease prevention medicines, while the selling prices remain disproportionate.<\/span><\/p>\n

The high fuel prices have impacted production, business activities, and all aspects of daily life. The livestock sector in Tien Giang Province is struggling amidst rising investment costs and uncertain agricultural product prices. Therefore, farmers are hoping for attention and support from government authorities and relevant agencies to overcome this price storm.<\/span><\/p>\n
